Saturday’s breakfast

When I was a kid, we used to go to my grandparents’ in the summer. Farm stock, they had corn, tomatoes, raspberries, peaches, and so on. My grandmother, who received her degree in Home Economics, was big on every lunch and dinner having a “salad” course– some cold fruit or vegetable, frequently canned fruit salad in lime jello. But there were also sun-warm beefeater tomatoes, with sugar or poppyseed dressing for my mom and grandma, or salt, pepper, and mayonaise for me and my grandpa. Yesterday’s breakfast brought that back, as I was working on this part of the Boston Organics delivery– it was starting to attract fruit flies, so I *had* to eat it. Never mind the joy of a perfectly ripe tomato– it’s all about eliminating pests. : )

Ham sandwich

I’m too tired tonight to cook real food, and I wanted something chewy, so dinner tonight was 1/2 a package of soba noodles, cooked 7 mins., with topped & tailed & halved green beans thrown in to blanch the last 3 minutes. Slopped into a bowl and topped with soy sauce, Sriracha, lime juice, and a wee bit of dark sesame sauce… but at least I ate some vegetables, so that offsets some of the carbs, right? (Just like a diet coke, against a Big Mac.)

Monochrome meal

I intentionally put off doing a real grocery trip this weekend, choosing instead to dredge the pantry until today, when our Boston Organics box gets delivered. Here’s last night’s comfort meal– japanese sticky rice with charred sweet onion slices, Soy Boy tofu lin teriyaki-flavored baked tofu, soy sauce, lime juice, rice wine vinegar, and Sriracha, the cure for all ills (or at least all underseasoned food).

I suppose I could have tossed some frozen shelled edamame or peas on there, but I didn’t feel like more vegetables than the onion. It was good for breakfast, too.

Late lunch

Three slices of manchego cheese, some oil-cured black olives, and my new favorite condiment/pickle, peppadew peppers, with a glass of red wine. Finished off with a small wedge of Penuche from The Fudge Bar. I love leaving the office early on a Friday.

Mindfulness

Since I have nothing else to write, I thought I would note that I was able to keep Thich Naht Hanh’s words in mind tonight as I ate my late (10:30 pm) supper– I just ate my few slices of cheddar, my one perfect Boston Organics nectarine, and drank my one glass of malbec. No reading, no talking to anyone. Just concentrating on the food in front of me.

Of course, making my first “ham sandwich” post is something to be mindful of, too.
