Arbor advocacy

If you’ve never walked around the Forest Hills Cemetery, this is a good time of year to do it. A lot of the photos that I’ve posted outside are from my walks in the Cemetery, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. It’s a park more than anything else, and there’s more “life” than you’d expect. The trust that maintains the cemetery also endows concerts, outdoor sculpture exhibits, poetry readings, and other events that bring the outside in.

And, they have the most fantastic copper beeches I’ve ever seen. In the summer, when it’s muggy and close, there’s nothing like taking shelter under one of the beeches and watching the geese on the pond. They’re enormous, and feel more alive than other trees, somehow. There are lots of other trees that are worth the visit, like the sugar maples in the fall, but those copper beeches, man, those are worth the trip.
